“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:6-7).
Paul provided saints of every generation the keys to never being cheated “through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world” (Col. 2:8). Walk in Christ. Be rooted in Christ. Be built up in Christ. And be established in the faith. If we will do those four things, we will never fall away from the one faith of Jesus Christ.
If we walk in Christ, we will walk just as He walked (1 John 2:6; cf. 1 Peter 2:21). We will walk according to His commandments (2 John 1:6; cf. John 14:15). We will walk in the truth (3 John 1:3-4; cf. John 8:31-32).
If we are rooted in Christ, we will be spiritually strong and stable (cf. Matt. 13:20-21). We will be steadfast. We will be immovable (1 Cor. 15:58). We will not be easily swayed “with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting” (Eph. 4:14).
Being “built up in Christ” means to be continually strengthened, developed, and established spiritually through a growing relationship with Him, in knowing and following His teachings. Paul used the image of a building under construction to describe spiritual growth. A building is not completed instantly - it grows steadily. Likewise, Christians are meant to continually mature in faith, character, and understanding (cf. 2 Peter 1:5-11).
Established means to be set firmly, fixed, settled, or made stable. The Christian is to be established in the faith of Christ. We are to be “established in the present truth” (2 Peter 1:12). We are to hold fast to the Head (Col. 2:19).
Are you walking in Christ Jesus the Lord - rooted and built up in Him, as well as established in the faith? If you are not, then determine to do so today, so that you will not drift away from Him. If you are, continue to be, so that “an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:11).
