“The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, ‘Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?’” (John 4:28-29).
The Samaritan woman from the town of Sychar had a life-changing encounter with Jesus at Jacob’s well. We are not told her name. Of course, the Lord knew everything about her, including her name. She would easily be viewed by most as a “minor” Bible character. And although her actions may seem quite simple to us, their impact was quite major to say the least.
“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all that I ever did’” (v. 39). This village filled with Samaritans, who Jews have no dealings with (v. 9), were ultimately brought to saving faith (vv. 40-42) because this woman left her waterpot to joyfully and excitedly share the good news about the Christ!
Can we not, and should we not, do the same today? Maybe it’s not leaving our waterpot to do so, but setting down our phone for a while, to simply engage with those around us about spiritual matters; to simply invite others to “come and see” or “come and hear” the gospel of Christ, the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16; Mk. 16:15-16).
Never underestimate the power and outcome of a simple, spiritual invitation to those we know (Acts 10:24), and even don’t know so well. Perhaps, we need to hear the same exhortation Jesus delivered to His own disciples on this occasion. “Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (v. 35).
