David began the one hundred third psalm by saying, “Bless the Lord, O my soul” (Psalm 103:1). He then proceeded to give reasons why God was worthy of praise.
He described God’s lovingkindness in this way: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:11). Others may show kindness to us, but God’s kindness toward us is so great it cannot be measured.
Because of this, God is willing to forgive us of our sins: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12). The psalmist used similar language to describe the greatness of God’s mercy in completely forgiving our sins.
All of us have sinned and have failed to live up to God’s standard (Romans 3:23). Yet God in His infinite mercy is willing to forgive us through Christ.
As the psalmist said, this kindness is shown to “those who fear Him” (Psalm 103:11). As Peter would say later, God welcomes those who fear Him and do what is right (Acts 10:35).
So remember the greatness of God’s lovingkindness. We can be forgiven of sins and receive the gift of God’s mercy. Therefore, let us fear Him and do what is right.
