“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12, ESV).
In spite of the sixty-six books of the Bible being written thousands of years ago, the words recorded on the pages of these ancient books are living still and they are active (powerful). What you and I hold in our hands is not a dead book, an outdated or irrelevant book. No just the opposite. These words are inspired by God himself (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21). These words provide all we need pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). Think of any current need or issue faced by humankind in the 21st century, and the Bible addresses it. And if we have the heart to receive these words, they will pierce us inwardly, deeply, like nothing in this world possibly can. The word of God will reveal and expose our very thoughts and intentions form within. That “piercing” will bring the sinner to salvation (Acts 2:36-41). That continued “piercing” will transform and mold the Christian in accordance with the perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). So let us remember that every time we pick up the word of God to read it, to meditate upon it, to share it with others - that it is truly living, active, and piercing - and thank, praise, and glorify God that this is so!
