When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, the walls were broken down, the gates were burned with fire, and the people were in distress and great reproach (1:3; 2:13). The walls had laid in ruins for almost 100 years since the Jewish people had returned to their homeland. They needed someone like Nehemiah to burst on to the scene to inspire and motivate them, and to light a fire under them to do an important work that should have taken place long ago. But one key reason why this enormous building project was such an incredible success is because “the people had a mind to work.” And with God’s help, the people led by Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem (6:15-16) in just 52 days!
If a local congregation of saints is made up of people that possess a mind to work, to do the Lord’s work (1 Cor. 15:58), great and wonderful things will be accomplished to God’s glory! The Bible classes will always have plenty who are willing to teach. Men will be preparing themselves to serve in the future as elders and deacons. Preachers will pour themselves into doing the work of a minister. Older women will teach the younger women. The lost will be taught the gospel. Members will grow in their faith in God and love for Christ. The local church will grow in number. The congregation will be a shining light in the community.
May every local church be made up of Christians who have a mind to work!
