This current controversy over baptisms being invalid because of a misspoken formula should remind us that there is no such formula found in the Bible.
For instance:
- Jesus told the apostles to baptize believers “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19).
- Peter told the Jews on Pentecost to “repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38).
- Philip had baptized the people of Samaria “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 8:16).
- Peter commanded those at the house of Cornelius “to be baptized in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:48).
There is no official baptismal formula. Effectual baptism is done by the authority, or in the name of, deity.
