Timothy, one of the apostle Paul’s fellow workers of the Lord (Romans 16:21; 1 Corinthians 16:10) and one whom Paul regarded to as his beloved and faithful son in the Lord (1 Corinthians 4:17) possessed some noble characteristics that are worthy of imitation. Knowing that, let’s take a look at some reasons for why we need to be more like Timothy. Starting with, we need to be more like Timothy because...
He Possessed A Genuine Faith.
In 2 Timothy 1:5, the apostle Paul reflects upon the genuine (i.e. un-hypocritical) faith of Timothy when he, in writing to Timothy penned, “when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.” You see, it’s important to note that when Paul reflected upon the genuine faith of Timothy which had first dwelt in his mother and grandmother he was filled with joy (2 Timothy 1:4). Therefore, we need more Timothy’s, more who possess a genuine faith, more who are a true son in the faith (1 Timothy 1:2).
He Obtained Knowledge of The Scriptures.
Paul encouraged Timothy to continue in the things that he had learned and had been assured of, and he reminds him that he had learned those things from the Holy Scriptures, which he had known since childhood (2 Timothy 3:14-15). You see, as Paul informed, the Holy Scriptures are able to make one wise for salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we need to understand what the will of the Lord is (Ephesians 5:17), and we need to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). So, we need more Timothy’s, more who have a knowledge of the Scriptures.
He Was A Soul-Winner For Jesus.
Timothy was one who diligently labored for the Lord (1 Thessalonians 3:2), and we learn from 2 Corinthians 1:19, that he preached Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to others. You see, we need more Timothy’s, more who are willing to preach Jesus Christ to others, more who are willing to win souls for Jesus.
He Was Well Spoken of By The Brethren.
We learn in Acts 16:1-2, that Timothy was one who was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. Simply put, Timothy was respected, he had a good reputation, and those who knew him gave him a good report. You see, Timothy had a good name, and we need more Timothy’s, more who are well spoken of by the brethren.
He Possessed A Sincere Care For The Brethren.
Perhaps, Timothy was so well spoken of by his brethren because he possessed a sincere care for them. We learn in Philippians 2:19-20, where Paul acknowledges Timothy’s sincere care for brethren. You see, Timothy was one who loved his brethren, and he sought to encourage them to always keep on keeping on in the faith (1 Thessalonians 3:1-6). Therefore, we need more Timothy’s, more who possess a sincere care for their brethren.
Once more, Timothy possessed some noble characteristics that are worthy of imitation. Therefore, why don’t we all strive to be more like Timothy? Let’s possess a genuine faith, let’s obtain knowledge of the Scriptures, let’s be a soul-winner for Jesus, let’s strive to have a good name, and let’s sincerely care for our brethren. For, my friend, there truly is a need for more Timothy’s!
