The MeTV network has a commercial for Perry Mason that says, “The truth never goes out of style.” It highlights the fashion of the cast members of this courtroom drama series.
That saying caught my attention the other day. God’s truth is eternal, but there are times when it has gone out of style with people.
In Matthew 19, the Pharisees asked Jesus a question about divorce. He answered by taking them back to God’s original design for marriage and concluded “Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate” (v. 6).
This answer did not satisfy them, so they pressed Jesus regarding Moses’ command to divorce (recorded in Deuteronomy 24:1-4). Jesus corrected their interpretation of this passage, again stressed God’s original design for marriage, then concluded, “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery” (v. 9).
This answer didn’t even sit well with the Lord’s disciples. They responded, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry” (v. 10).
God’s truth regarding divorce and remarriage was out of style. However, notice that the Lord did not make any apologies to those who were offended or any concessions to public opinion. He said, “All cannot accept this saying,” acknowledged the sacrifices some would have to make to abide in this truth and still inherit the kingdom of heaven, and concluded, “He who is able to accept it, let him accept it” (vs. 11-12).
We need to learn an important lesson from this passage. The truth is always in style with the Lord, and if we are to maintain our fellowship with Him, the truth must be in style with us as well. Jesus warned, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).
We are living in an adulterous and sinful generation, but there is no need to change with the times because there will come a day when God’s truth will once again be in style. On Judgment Day, the whole world will be judged by the words of Jesus (John 12:48). The truth of God’s word should always be in style with God’s people.
