This was an extremely low point in the life of the prophet Elijah. In fact, in 1 Kings 19:4 he prayed that he might die, that God would take his life. This righteous servant of the LORD had given it his all to stand opposed to false religion, and turn the nation of Israel back to God and His covenant, but now all those diligent efforts seemed to be to no avail. Furthermore, he felt like he was the only one left serving God faithfully, and for that, his life was in great peril. In a still small voice (19:12), the LORD reminds His faithful servant that he was not alone. In fact, not even close to being the only one that continued to remain faithful to God. There were thousands of others. Also, the LORD informed Elijah that it wasn’t time for him to quit or die. God still had important work for his servant to do (19:15-17).
Whenever you feel weary, discouraged, and even depressed in life, remember the story of Elijah. Hear God’s still small voice reassuring you and instructing you through His inspired will. Whenever you feel all alone in living righteously, remember the story of Elijah. There may be relatively few in this world who are faithful in serving and obeying God, but you are not alone. “Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace” (Rom. 11:5). Our mighty God has promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5). He is “not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name” (Heb. 6:10). So, dear Christian friend, “let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Gal. 6:9).
