"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it" (1 Cor. 10:13).
We all face temptation. Satan, the tempter (1 Thess. 3:5), certainly seeks to entice and allure us to sin against God. Each day it is critically important that we remain sober-minded and watchful "because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). How wonderful then that Paul assures us of three wonderful truths about temptation in this passage.
1. We will not encounter some unique temptation. What we face is "common to man."
2. God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able.
3. With every temptation, God will also provide a way of escape.
God is faithful, but we must do our part and resist the devil steadfast in the faith so that he will flee from us (James 4:7; 1 Pet. 5:9).
When you and I face temptation this week (or whenever it may arise), let us readily call to mind the enduring truths spoken of here, and be sure to give thanks and praise to our gracious God!
