Why is it that some congregations grow rapidly while others under similar circumstances grow slowly? This is a truth and thus a question for which we need to find an answer. After giving it some thought, I would like to suggest some less than profound and obvious truths concerning real church growth for your consideration.
First, the church grows where there is a spirit of love, unity, and understanding among the members; and where the brethren in turn manifest these attitudes toward the people of the community. A divisive spirit in the membership will not allow for growth. And a "better-than-thou" or "we-are-right-and-you-are-wrong" attitude cannot convert people to Christ.
Second, the church grows where there is a will to work. When the church has the attitude that they are too small to do much or each member does not feel personally responsible to serve the Lord, they will do nothing. Such churches are nothing more than worshipping societies which are only "keeping house for the Lord." A church which works will win souls and will grow both numerically and spiritually.
Finally, a church will grow where God is honored, Christ is preached, and where the Holy Spirit plays an important role in the life of the disciples by being the guiding force. When the gospel is preached in truth and love and when the lives of the members exemplify that truth and love in their daily lives, the church is truly on the march and will be everything that Christ wants it to be.
