Tomorrow our nation will observe Memorial Day. This day is set aside as an opportunity for us to remember those who have given their lives in service to our nation to ensure the freedom we enjoy.
On the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord lovingly established a memorial for the sacrifice He was about to make to ensure our freedom from sin and condemnation.
"And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is My body.' Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins'" (Matt. 26:26-28).
As followers of Christ, we assemble every Sunday to observe this memorial (Acts 20:7). When we partake of the unleavened bread, we remember the physical pain and suffering Jesus underwent for our sins ("by His stripes we are healed" - Is. 53:5). As we partake of the fruit of the vine, we remember that blood was shed (a life was given) for us. "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15:13). We are to be careful to observe this memorial in a worthy manner. We are to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf.
It is fitting that we remember the sacrifices made to grant us physical blessings. It is even more fitting that we take the time to properly remember the sacrifice that was made to ensure our spiritual and eternal blessings.
