Jesus Christ is the example we are to follow in all things. On the night that He was betrayed, He prayed unto the Father and said, "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do" (John 17:4).
Jesus accomplished the greatest work the world will ever know in a few short years because of the approach and attitude He had towards His time and His work. "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work" (John 9:4).
Nehemiah inspired the Jews to accomplish the great work of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem in just fifty-two days. They finished building the wall because "they set their hands to this good work... for the people had a mind to work" (Neh. 2:18; 4:6).
The Bible tells us to be industrious.
- "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might..." (Eccl. 9:10, NASU).
- "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men" (Col. 3:23, NASU).
- "Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest" (Prov. 6:6-8).
The standard set for us in the Scriptures is to make the best use of our time by having a mind to work and getting things done, with an understanding that we will give an account to the Lord for the way we have used our time and opportunities (Rom. 14:12). Are we living up to this righteous standard?
