I have a book to help ministers that a family member gave me years ago. The section on Funerals begins with the observation, "When a death occurs the church comes alive." The manual goes on to talk about how the members of the church not only mourn the loss of a member, but also respond to help and comfort those for whom the loss is the most painful.
Just as Paul told the Thessalonians, "But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you" (1 Thess. 4:9), I can say, "Concerning the proper way to respond when a death occurs in the church, Knollwood needs no instruction."
While the unusual number of deaths we have experienced in the past nine months is discouraging, I continue to be amazed at the way all of you respond to these moments. The expressions of love and sympathy are always outpouring. Many take time out of their busy schedules (including some taking time off work) to attend the visitations and funerals. Regarding the opportunity to provide meals for the family, volunteers to provide food and service always come through. There is always more than enough.
The flower fund is a way that we, as a congregation, express our condolences to brethren both in the area and when deaths occur in other places. I understand the fund is low. Please see John and Becky Sellers if you can help.
I am glad to be a member of the Knollwood church of Christ. Not only because we stand for the truth, but because we truly love one another.
