When we talk about evangelism we are speaking of the efforts we put forth as individuals, and collectively as a local congregation, to bring the lost to Christ. One challenge faced by all Christians is finding "prospects" - that is, finding those who are interested in coming to worship services, having a Bible Study, etc.
"Prospects" can be found anywhere, but I fear there is a group of individuals who are sometimes overlooked when it comes to our efforts to save the lost - unfaithful Christians. "Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins" (James 5:19-20). Restoring erring and unfaithful Christians is a part of the work of saving lost souls.
There has been a common observation that I have made everywhere I have lived and labored as a preacher, and many places where I have held gospel meetings: if we could just restore the unfaithful Christians in the area, the church building would be filled to capacity! Think about that for a moment, especially those who have been members here for several years. How many unfaithful Christians who used to be members here at Knollwood are still living in this area?
Our Fall Gospel Meeting with Steve Monts is four weeks away (Sept. 14-19). I challenge every member to make an effort to reach out to unfaithful Christians and invite them to attend our meeting. Make a list of as many of them as you can, going back as many years as you can, and extend an invitation to them. Mail a meeting flier to them. Give them a call. They may have turned down such invitations in the past, but who knows... maybe something has happened in their life and they are now ready to come home to the Lord, they just need a little push.
