Let's consider some Scriptural reasons why it is important for Christians to regularly attend the church's worship services.
To worship God. "... For it is written, You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve." {Matthew 4:10} We offer God praise, honor, and glory when we assemble to worship Him. Only He is worthy of our worship. How can we willfully miss opportunities to worship Him?
To answer the call to obedience. "And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him." {Hebrews 5:9} God has called upon us to attend His services, {Hebrews 10:25; Acts 2:42}. Some acts, such as giving and the Lord's Supper, can occur only when we come together on the first day of the week {1 Corinthians 11:23-29; 16:1,2}.
To edify ourselves. "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ... " {2 Peter 3:18} God's word is able to build up our faith and resolve to follow Him {Acts 20:32}. "For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established - that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me." {Romans 1:11,12} When we hear God's word, remember His death, sing His praises, petition His throne of grace and mercy, and give Him a small part of what He has given us, it builds our faith.
To provoke our brethren to greater service."And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works." {Hebrews 10:24} How can I encourage my brethren when they know I could be here with the saints, but I choose not to do so? Don't we love our brethren enough to want to do all we can to encourage them to serve God? Spiritual fellowship is one way we edify one another. Don't you look forward to being with your spiritual family when the church assembles? What about you dear readers-do you attend regularly?
