"To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion-a wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel." {Proverbs 1:2-5}
God commands His children to study the Bible: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." {2 Timothy 2:15} Even under Moses' Law, Israel's king was to have a copy of the law and read it continually to make sure he followed all of God's instructions. Why do we need to diligently search for God's wisdom? Let's consider a couple of reasons.
God knows the beginning from the end. "As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue." {2 Peter 1:3} Listen carefully to Peter's words. God has given us all things that pertain to "life and godliness." We attain that life and godliness by receiving the knowledge of God. By gaining knowledge about Christ and heeding God's instructions regarding how to live godly lives, we can achieve everything we need to in this life. "Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age." {Titus 2:12}
God always gives good counsel. "Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word. Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law." {Psalm 119:17, 18} What is God's desire for all men? "Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." {1 Timothy 2:4} Since God wants salvation to come to every man, how could He possibly give bad counsel and lead us astray? He will always direct our steps in ways that will profit us and prepare us to live with Him throughout eternity. He is an expert on every subject-human relationships, emotional control, religious matters, achieving success in this life, and most importantly, getting to heaven. God not only knows the answers to all our questions, He also knows the questions before we ask them. The book of Proverbs teaches, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." {Proverbs 11:14} It is wise to get several viewpoints when you're tackling a difficult problem, but God's wisdom and counsel stands head and shoulders above all the rest.
God created the heavens and earth, and He created us. He knows what we need, what will sustain us, and what can destroy us. God's wisdom can never be equaled by any human's wisdom. We should never consider human wisdom as being superior to God's counsel. May He help each of us not only to search out His divine wisdom, but when we find it, to have sufficient faith to put it into practice in our lives. Study God's book, and you will find His wisdom. Put it to the test-you will not be disappointed.
