In Defense of the Unborn
By Steven J. Wallace

Since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized unrestricted abortion on January 22, 1973, there has followed a mass butchering of the unborn-in fact, 36.5 million for the years 1973 through 1996 (see www.roevwade.org/rvw1.html). The blood shed in this hostile war of the womb dwarfs that shed in the major wars of recent history. For example, consider the following statistics (http://www.electrosnap.com/aborti on/stats/):

  1. Revolutionary War - 4,435 deaths

  2. Civil War - 498,332 deaths

  3. WW1 - 116,708 deaths

  4. WW2 - 407,316 deaths

  5. Korean War - 25,604 deaths

  6. Vietnam War - 58,168

  7. ABORTION WAR- 36,500,000 deaths (1973-1996). Another 3.5 million unborn children were heartlessly slaughtered during the years 1997-2000. This holocaust continues until today! (Current numbers show the total as over 45 million since 1973! KMG)

I wonder how many of our founding fathers would have thought that over the years, America would progress to the point where we actually provide, in the medical profession, a sanctuary for killing the innocent. What would they say today about the soullessness of this nation, which used to have In God We Trust as its motto? How many of them would have envisioned that it would be safer on the battle field than in a mother's womb? Over 40 million abortions ... over 40 million of the truly innocent of the human race have been put to death in this nation alone! These statistics do not include all the other millions of babies butchered in other nations as offerings to the god of choice.

That abortion is a compacted progression of sin upon sin is evident from the fact that 78% of women who have abortions are unmarried (see http://www.religioustolerance.org/abofact2.htm). The previously mentioned site also says, "Abortions are relatively rare among married women ... " and "About 1% of all abortions are sought because of abusive sexual acts." So, an overwhelming number of abortions occur on women who are not married; and only 1% relate to sexual abuse (i.e., rape). There we see the proof that ungodliness spawns more ungodliness and that the majority of women who choose to kill their unborn babies also chose previously to engage in sexual activity outside of marriage. They think they are mature enough to have sexual relations outside of a marital commitment. Essentially, they are supposedly mature enough to have sexual relations but not mature enough to commit to marriage partners or be hindered by the children residing within their wombs. According to the One who created male and female for marriage, sexual activity is permitted only in marriage. Fornicators and adulterers practice sex outside of God's law and outside of true marital commitment.

"Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4)

The effects of the decision to abort the unborn are also negative for women in general. Abortion has been shown to coincide with an increased risk of breast cancer and future miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and premature births. Other risks involve hemorrhaging, cardiac arrest, infection, death, etc. There are also emotional effects--mental illness, guilt, substance abuse, sleep disturbance, and even suicide. The web site, www.bfl.org reports:

One study found that a teenager is ten times more likely to attempt suicide if she has had an abortion in the last six months than a teenage girl who has not. Another study of women suffering post-abortion trauma found that 60 percent had suicidal thoughts, 28 percent had attempted suicide, and 18 percent had tried more than once, sometimes years after their abortions. (Garfinkel et al, "Stress, depression and suicide: A study of adolescents in Minnesota, " University of Minnesota Extension Service, 1986; Reardon, "A survey of psychological reactions, " The Elliot Institute, 1987)

Indeed, the old proverb rings true today. "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." (Prov. 16:25).

If men and women would get back to considering God's choices when they make their own choices, they would save themselves a lot of sorrow and regret. The longer we ride in the self-will chariot, the closer we get to driving into depravity. There, the choices of the wicked run over the helpless and the innocent. The guilty will endure the tormenting flames of Hell. We desperately need to bolster a roadblock on the immoral path on which our society is traveling. We need to continue to raise our voices in opposition to the wicked and in defense of the needy.

"They have grown fat, they are sleek; yes, they surpass the deeds of the wicked; they do not plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless; yet they prosper, and the right of the needy they do not defend." (Jeremiah 5:28)

Without question, some medical professionals are growing fat from the legalized slaughter of the innocent. That it is enticing the wrath of God is equally without debate.

"These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren." (Proverbs 6:16-19)

Note that God hates hands that shed innocent blood and hearts that devise evil plans. What is more evil than creating contraptions and procedures to ruthlessly rip out and destroy a living child within a mother's womb? Some would question whether or not it is yet a child. A pregnant woman is not one person but one with child. Her choice to abort is not only about her body, it is also about her child's life.

"As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the works of God who makes everything." (Ecclesiastes 11:5)

When God looks down from heaven on a pregnant woman, He sees one who is "with child." That this child is alive is made evident when we consult Job 3:11, "Why did I not die at birth? Why did I not perish when I came from the womb?"

Job's question, "Why did I not die at birth?" shows that he was alive at birth. You cannot die unless you are alive! Calling an unborn child a fetus doesn't change the fact that it is alive!

This is also shown in Exodus 21:22,23: "If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life."

The woman is hurt, but the emphasis in this passage is regarding any harm to the child she is carrying. If harm follows, or the child dies, then the penalty is life for life. Is this not positive proof that the child within the womb is alive? What is at stake is not a choice; it is a living child.

Another passage to consider is Psalm 139:13-16: "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw My substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."

David referred to himself while in his mother's womb. One cannot refer to himself without referring to a person. Therefore, a pregnant woman's womb contains a person.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5).

What if Jeremiah's mother had chosen to abort him? She would have aborted the life of one God knew, sanctified, and ordained to Divine service as a prophet before he was formed in the womb.

We submit these truths, whether observed facts of science and history, or readable truths from God's word, in defense of the unborn. We lament when soldiers die in war, when friends and family die, and when children pass on before us. As a nation, we need to mourn the millions conceived in darkness yet denied, by a mother's pitiful decision, nature's journey from the womb. These will never:

People "without natural affection" ended their lives while they were in the womb. Another person's choice deprived them of their chances to experience these physical and emotional encounters. Our only comfort lies in the knowledge that they will be comforted by the One who formed and knew them in the womb. Little comfort comes to those who shed innocent blood. Their consciences will walk endlessly along the darkened but well-traveled halls of condemnation and regret, knowing that they were graciously given life, which they selfishly used to terminate the lives of others. God hates what they've done, but He hates all sin. He is willing to forgive those who repent and meet His terms for salvation (Romans 5:9, 10; 6:3, 4; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38). Will you abort the sin of abortion? Will you begin to defend the unborn and raise your voice for those who cannot speak?

Surely, God's people cannot allow their voices to remain silent while this senseless killing continues. It is amazing that we worry more about trees, whales, seals, polar bears, birds, climate control, and global warming than about the lives of the unborn! That we place so little value on human life, which is precious in God's sight, is a sad commentary on our values. Please consider Romans 1:32 when you attempt to defend voting for those who openly support laws that promote abortion. What has happened to common sense and our morals? (KMG)
