In November our citizens will go to the polls to elect a new President (for four years) and new members of Congress. Voting is a privilege and a right for every American citizen. Should Christians participate in this process. Some religions teach their members it is sinful for them to vote. What does the Bible say?
God ordained authority. "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil." {Romans 13:1-4}
God instituted civil government for the good of the people. Government and authority are there to protect the righteous. This does not mean that we can abide by everything that government says. God does place some limits. According to Acts 5:29, we must always put God first. When there is conflict between what government says and God's word directs, we must be faithful to God despite the consequences.
We are to pray for those in authority. "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence." {1 Timothy 2:1,2} We need to pray that the authorities will look to God for wisdom and guidance in making decisions. Along with their awesome responsibility comes the knowledge that they will answer to God for their choices {2 Corinthians 5:10}.
We need to be aware of the candidates' positions. "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." {Proverbs 14:34} God's people must look carefully at what the candidates say about moral issues of the day. This goes way beyond one's party preference-Democratic, Republican, or Independent. Where does he stand on abortion? Where does he stand on homosexual marriage? What kind of judges would he appoint to the Supreme Court? Would he protect our religious freedom by keeping our country strong and safe from our enemies? What kinds of choices would be made concerning woman's role in the private sector?
Yes, we need to go the polls in November. Just remember that as you cast your vote, God is observing your selection. How can you separate a man's politics from his moral views? One only has to convince God it can be done!
