Jesus declared, "If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32) Jesus affirmed that which many today deny. We can KNOW the truth. And the Father wants us to know the truth. "Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:4) How sad it is that there are millions who do not desire, or are ignorant of, the truth and of God.
"For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened."(Romans 1:20-21)
Of those who believed in God, we read, "For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God." (Romans 10:3) They were zealous of God, but it was not according to knowledge (Cf. vs.2). Thus, as it is also written, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
Thus, many reject the very truth that can save them. And that same truth will judge and condemn them on the last day (Cf. John 12:44-50). How sad it will be for many because they should have known, but rejected, the truth--truth that even the demons know. And what truths do the demons know?" Take note of the following four:
- Demons "Know" That There Is One True God! "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." (James 2:19) Yes, demons "believe and tremble," something that many today do not do. Some are atheists, (but I wonder how many of them "believe" in demons); some believe in "Allah" or some other deity; and some profess to know God, but they deny Him, as it is written, "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." (Titus 1:16) And it is certain that they do not tremble; they are not afraid. "Knowing" God is one thing; "obeying" Him is another, altogether different thing.
"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power." (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9) It is no wonder the demons tremble. "Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men;..." (2 Corinthians 5:11) Do you "know" and believe God? - They "Know" That Jesus Is the Christ! "And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And He rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that He was Christ." (Luke 4:41)
"And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with Thee, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know Thee who Thou art; the Holy One of God." (Luke 4:33-34)
Yes, demons "know" Jesus is the Christ, but many people today do not. Many believe in other gods; some believe in Krishna; and some believe in Buddha. Others follow Mohammed, or some other well-known man; but they do not believe that Jesus is the Christ.
It is written, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Salvation is in no other. Jesus said, "... if ye believe not that I Am, ye shall die in your sins." (John 8:24) But Jesus also taught, "I am come in My Father's Name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive." (John 5:43)
Like the demons, many today claim to "know" Him; yet, they continue to deny Him. "Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy Name, and in Thy Name have cast out devils, and in Thy Name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:22-23) - They "Know" True Apostles! "Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know: but who are ye?" (Acts 19:13-15)
Yes, they "knew" the true servant of Christ. But many people today do not. Some are willing to accept, without investigation, whatever a man says. Some are willing, also without investigation, to accept what an organization says. This was not the case with some of the early Christians. "I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars." (Revelation 2:2)
How many of the men who claim to be "apostles" perform the miracles of an apostle, or preach the same Gospel that the apostles preached? Not one of them.
"Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds." (2 Corinthians 12:11)
"But though we, or an angel from Heaven, preach any other Gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:8) So many today are being deceived and led straight into Hell (Cf. Matthew 15:14). Do you "know" how to recognize a true servant of God? (Cf. 2 Timothy 2:19; 1 John 4:1). - They "Know" Their Destruction Is Coming! "And, behold, they cried out saying, What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God? Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?" (Matthew 8:29) The demons spoke of the time of judgment and eternal torment. "Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." (Matthew 25:41; Cf. 12:22-28) Hell is a prepared place, and the demons "know" it. Yet, many today, even some who claim to be members of the church of Christ, deny it. If not Hell, about what was Jesus teaching in Mark 9:42-48? And what did He mean when He spoke, in Matthew 25:46, of "everlasting punishment." How can there be "punishment" unless the one being punished remembers why he's being punished?
"True" Christians KNOW what the demons "know." And armed with that knowledge, they prepare for the Great Day that is coming. What about you? "Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen." (2 Peter 3:17-18) Are you ready?
