Every New Year's eve, many folks make what we call "New Year's Resolutions." Do you remember the ones you made last year? Did you keep them? God tells us we should take seriously the vows we make to Him. Do you mean when I make a resolution, God holds me accountable for keeping it? "When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; for He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed -- better not to vow than to vow and not pay." Ecclesiastes 5:4,5} Never forget. God hears everything we say. (Matthew 12:36). I'm not trying to discourage making resolutions, but to be sure they can be kept. Let me suggest a few.
I'm going to be a better Bible student this year. How can this resolution become a reality? "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." {Matthew 5:6} It begins with an increase in our spiritual desire for His word. We cannot increase our Bible knowledge until we increase our desire to spend time studying God's word. "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." {2 Timothy 2:15}
I'm going to get involved in the teaching program. Why do so many congregations of the Lord's church have trouble finding Bible class teachers? In a nutshell -- it's because the members' lack concern and are unprepared to become teachers. For this to become a reality, I must first put into practice my resolution. Next, I must see the value in becoming a teacher. I personally grow the most when I teach in the Bible classes! I must be prepared to teach, or the lack of preparation will be obvious. Another thing to remember is the importance of the teaching to our children. What could possibly be more important in our children's lives than good Bible study classes? Parents have this duty in the home, but we can help reinforce that teaching through the work done in our classes. Classes need teachers, and teachers need to want to be involved!
I'm going to have better attendance. Yes, every year, I hear this one from members. The problem is that it will not become reality, unless one WANTS to be with God's people when there is opportunity. The problem is not attendance as much as lack of desire to be with God and His people. Do you love God? Do you love your brethren? Do you love His word? If you answer "yes" to these questions, the problem is solved! If not...
