A few years ago, Conway Twitty released a hit song that had the same name as this article. In the song, he compared real cowboys to "drug-store cowboys." He sang of those who had Stetson hats, designer vests, blue jeans, and fancy cowboy boots. There was only one problem -- they had never ridden horses, roped cows, or even attended rodeos! In other words, he who appears to be a cowboy may not be a cowboy because he doesn't behave like a cowboy. How can you tell the difference -- "wait until you see him ride." Let me share with you some thoughts about religious matters to which the "don't call.....until you see....." phrase might apply.
"Don't called him a gospel preacher -- until you hear him preach." Gospel preachers preach the gospel -- they don't tell funny stories and avoid using scripture. Attending a so-called Bible school, having great speaking ability, being in demand, and holding many meetings doesn't make a man a gospel preacher.
"Don't call them faithful just because they attend the church services." Sadly, many equate faithfulness to regular church attendance. Faithful attendance is important, but it is not the only thing required of a person who is faithful.
"Don't call them Christians until you see how they live." Again, many have taken the first steps in their obedience to Christ. They talk the talk, but they do not walk the walk! Being a Christian is more than just obeying the gospel. Do we live each day for God? Have we separated ourselves from the world? Does He have first place in our lives? Do you deny yourself and take up your cross daily? Are you walking worthily? Do you shine your light so the lost can see? Are you serving only ONE master? Applying and living the truth are every bit as important as becoming a Christian.
