Jesus resurrection from the dead is by far the most compelling evidence that our Lord provided concerning His Deity. "And declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead." {Romans 1:4} John testified concerning this remarkable and wonderful event?
Jesus told them He would come forth. "So the Jews answered and said to Him, 'What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?' Jesus answered and said to them, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.' Then the Jews said, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?' But He was speaking of the temple of His body." {John 2:18-21} They belittled Him, believing He spoke of the physical temple, which had taken 46 years to build. Following the resurrection, the disciples remembered this conversation (John 18:22).
Jesus showed and told of His power over the grave. Following Lazarus death, Martha believed that her brother would rise again. "Now Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.' Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.' Martha said to Him, 'I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.'" {John 11:21-24} Then He went on to tell them why they could have confidence in Him. "...I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" {John 11:25,26} He gave His enemies grief because they could not prove Him to be a hoax!
Jesus died on the cross of Calvary. "Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out." {John 19:32-34} Yes, his enemies completed their cruel, ungodly work. But that was not the end of the story! By putting Him to death, they helped to complete His final work on earth!
An empty tomb. "Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed." {John 20:6-8} Where was He? He had risen! "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'" {John 20:17} He then appeared to doubting Thomas. "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing." {John 20:27} Yes, He overcame the grave, thereby giving all mankind hope that death was not the end of the story--we, too, will overcome death!
Trying to stem the tide, His enemies invented a story about his body having been stolen by His disciples. But the empty tomb spoke volumes, as did all of His post-resurrection appearances, that He indeed was the Son of the living God. By His death, He freed man from the bondage of death that Satan held over his head (Hebrews 2:9-15). What say ye now dear reader--do you BELIEVE He was the Christ?
