What makes a good preacher? When a congregation of God's people looks for a preacher, about what should they be concerned? It seems to depend on who one asks. There must be a better way than to depend on the opinions of well-meaning brethren. The Bible gives us some guidelines. In the 21st century, we need preachers like the prophets. Today's preacher would be exceedingly blessed by having the good qualities of the past prophets. Following are a few for your consideration.
Had Deep Conviction - The prophets of old were convinced that the people needed the messages they delivered. "Therefore, thus will I do to you, Oh Israel; and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Oh Israel." (Amos 4:12) "Oh Israel, return to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity." (Hosea 4:1) These men saw the urgency of their messages and the people's deep need to respond promptly. Do today's preachers preach with such urgency and conviction? If the speaker isn't convinced, he cannot convince those who listen.
Did Not Beat Around the Bush - There were no hidden agendas. The messages were plain and to the point. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priests for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children." (Hosea 4:6) "He has shown you, Oh man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8) Too many preachers try to "sneak in the back door" with their lessons. Time and souls are too precious for us to play games. A preacher must speak the truth in love and say, in an understandable, straightforward way, what needs to be said.
Did Not Fear Men's Reactions - The prophets told the plain truth and let the chips fall where they may. Read Ezra 10:10-12 and Obadiah 1:12-15. Too often today, before a preacher takes a position regarding an issue, he waits until he sees "who lines up where." Men must fear God's anger and displeasure more than they fear the brethren. Why withhold what the brethren need to hear simply because they do not wish to hear it. We must love their souls.
Saw the People's True Condition - The hearts of the prophets were touched by the sad conditions existing among the people. Read the weeping prophecies in Jeremiah and Lamentations. What made Jeremiah weep? He saw the people's sinful condition before God and the toll sin was taking on them. Preachers need to see the grave condition of the sin-covered soul. There is only one remedy.
Do you believe we need preachers like the prophets. The church already has too many "smooth, fair speakers." God sent these men with their pointed messages to bring His people out of sin and suffering. I believe we need more preachers like the prophets. May their tribe increase!
