The Christian and the Perfect Law of Liberty
by Jesse A. Flowers

“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25).

The law of Christ, the law of liberty, that sets us free from our sins (cf. John 8:32), is perfect and complete (cf. 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Jude 3; 2 Peter 1:3). Please notice carefully how we are to interact and respond to it in our life in order to be blessed. We are to (1) look into it, (2) be a doer of it, (3) and continue in it. But how many of us do all three?

Many look into the New Testament of Christ, but then are forgetful hearers, and ultimately do not heed the teachings of Jesus Christ (cf. Matt. 7:21-23, 24-27; Luke 6:46). Others look into the doctrine of Christ and follow it for a period of time, but then fail to continue in it throughout their lifetime (cf. James 5:19-20; 2 Peter 2:20-22). Finally, there a "few" (cf. Matt. 7:13-14; Luke 13:23-24) who will look into the Word of God, humbly do the will of God, and continue in it all the days of their life (cf. 1 Cor. 15:58; Rev. 2:10).

Many in this world want to be blessed by God in this life and in the life to come, but only those who look into His Word, keep His commandments, and faithfully continue in it will experience those blessings. And so let us "be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves" (James 1:22).
