Observations on Song Leading
by Heath Rogers

We have begun a "Song Leaders" class on the second Sunday afternoon of each month. I appreciate this effort and encourage all who are interested to attend.

Having received "Preaching Advice" from those who are not preachers, perhaps you will allow me to give some "Song Leading Advice" from one who is not a song leader.

Sunday morning worship service is not the time for the congregation to learn new songs. We want our singing to be at its best during this hour of worship. This will not be the case if we are all listening to one another learn a new song. The fourth Sunday Song Service and singings in one-another's homes are the appropriate times to learn new songs.

Lead an "up-beat" song before the sermon. The singing is worship, but it also sets the mood for the other parts of worship. While slower songs have their place, the preacher shouldn't have to "wake up the congregation" so they can hear his sermon.

We are to sing with the understanding (1 Cor. 14:15). From time to time, it is fitting to remind us what a song is about, or point out the words of a verse, to help us focus on a specific spiritual truth while we are singing.

Have that invitation song ready. Come up out of the pew leading the song.

We are blessed with great song leaders here at Knollwood. I truly appreciate your talent and your efforts to lead us in our worship unto God. Keep up the good work.
