What Size of Container Do You Use?
by Derek Chambers

"And he said to them, 'Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away'" (Mark 4:24-25).

Imagine a situation where various people are all going to a well to get fresh water and each person has a different container to take the water home in. Some have buckets, some have jars, some have bottles, a few have large tanks and a few others, nothing but a cup. Which people are going to get the most water from the well? Obviously the people who come to the well with the largest containers.

It is in this same sense that Jesus speaks of receiving from him according to your own measure. We will receive from Jesus, from the word of God, and from all things that God offers us according to the size of the container we bring to the well. What determines the size of our containers? Our hearts, willingness and receptiveness. What mostly conditions these things? A humble sense of need. Think of the well again. Those who have the greatest sense of need and understanding of their need are going to bring the largest containers. Those who think they have enough water already or that water isn't that important are only going to bring a small cup to the well, and sometimes not even that.

What size of container do you bring to the well that is the word and spiritual blessings of God?
