Praying For Evangelism

All Christians can participate in evangelism. The first thing we can do is pray. Prayer is a God-given tool to help us convert others. Jesus said to the chosen seventy, "pray" and then He said "go" (Luke 10:2-3). What precedes our going is prayer!

Pray For Laborers. When Jesus told the seventy to pray, He specifically said, "pray... to send out laborers into His harvest." One of the great needs the Lord has is for people willing to work to convert others. The gospel is God's power to convert, but unless we are willing to declare this good news many will never know its power.

Pray For Peace and the Swift Advance of the Gospel. Paul exhorted Timothy that "first of all... supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men... that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life" because God "desires all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:1-4). To the Thessalonians Paul wrote, "pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly... and... we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men" (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2).

Pray For the Opportunity To Teach Others. "Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ... that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak" (Colossians 4:2-4). We all desire for that opportunity to teach those we know. Then pray for it!

Pray For the Salvation of Specific People. "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved" (Romans 10:1). All of us have family and friends we would like to see saved. We agonize over their lost condition. We long for them to know and share the joys we have as Christians. Then pray for them!

Pray For Boldness. In Acts 4:29 the disciples did. "Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word." Knowing it would not be easy and in the face of opposition they prayed. The Lord answered them. "And they spoke the word of God with boldness" (4:31).

These are some things we can do. Let us do them!
