"Now, It Is Different"
By Keith Greer

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." {2 Timothy 3:16,17}

What does this verse mean? It simply means that every word in the Bible came from God. The verse further states that God's word completes its followers "for every good work." The Scriptures tell us that God cannot lie {Hebrews 6:18, Titus 1:2}. According to the Apostle Peter, we have "been given all things that pertain to life and godliness," {2 Peter 1:3}. Sadly, some have become dissatisfied with God's book and are trying to convince us that we need to consult other writings. They tell us that some things have CHANGED. Please read the following quote from the Standard manual for Baptist Churches, by Edward T. Hiscox Cpt. IV, pg.22:

"It is most likely that in the Apostolic age when there was but 'one Lord, one faith, and one baptism,' and no differing denominations existed, the baptism of a convert by that very act constituted him a member of the church, and at once endowed him with all the rights and privileges of full membership. In that sense, "baptism was the door into the church." Now, it is different; and while the churches are desirous of receiving members, they are wary and cautious that they do not receive unworthy persons. The churches therefore have candidates come before them, make their statement, give their "experience," and then their reception is decided by a vote of the members. And while they cannot become members without baptism, yet it is the vote of the body which admits them to its fellowship on receiving baptism."

When did the Bible change and who authorized the changes? Do all these changes please the Lord? We know that He has all authority "in heaven and on earth." {Matthew 28:18} Did He delegate some of His Divine authority to the Baptist church? If so, I agree that "Now it is different." Is it God's will for a prospective church member to relate his "experience" and for a "vote of the body" to determine whether, upon baptism, he can be admitted "to its fellowship"? Why is church membership no longer determined by obedience to the Scriptures? Could this be why so many religious people are so confused? When did what people say and write become equal to God's inspired word?

Unfortunately, some people have more confidence in men's words than in God's holy and Divine word. Many passages {Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:5,6; 1 Corinthians 4:6; Revelation 22:18,19} forbid adding to or diminishing from what God has said. When people do this, they are, in essence, telling us that human wisdom usurps what is Divine! I prefer to take my chances with the words of truth that came from God. "Differences" have serious consequences of which I want no part!
