Partakers
By Marc W. Gibson

The Bible mentions things of which Christians partake. A partaker "participates" or "shares" in something. Christians partake of:

  1. The Heavenly Calling - "Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus." (Hebrews 3:1) This calling that makes us holy brethren is a heavenly calling. We are not called by an earthly calling, but by Christ Jesus through the gospel (2 Thessalonians 2:14). We should strive to be faithful to this divine calling in all things.

  2. Christ - "For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end." (Hebrews 3:14) All spiritual blessings are found in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Being partakers of Christ means sharing in God's eternal purpose to save our souls from sin. That is why we must be "steadfast to the end." In Christ, we find our eternal salvation, if we remain faithful to Him.

  3. His Holiness - "For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness." (Hebrews 12:10) Divine discipline helps the Christian grow and mature in his character. That character should resemble God's holiness: "Be holy, for I am holy." (1 Peter 1:16) What a privilege it is to know and imitate God's holiness in our lives.

  4. The Divine Nature - "By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." (2 Peter 1:4) Partaking of the "divine nature" does not mean that, in some sense, we become divine. Rather, it means that we share in the character and blessings afforded to those who are in fellowship with God. This is made possible through God's word, which contains all divine knowledge and promises (vv. 3-4).

  5. The Inheritance - "Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light." (Colossians 1:12) We have an inheritance that is "incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." (1 Peter 1:4-5) What a wonderful hope for the Christian! This is an inheritance that will last forever and that, by God's promise, is reserved for the faithful. How tragic it would be to lose this inheritance through neglect or indifference. Are you now partaking of Christ and anticipating the eternal inheritance He promised the faithful?
