What Makes Worship "Good"
By Keith Greer

"God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth." (John 4:24) First and foremost, our attitudes must be right. We must offer worship to please God, not ourselves (Galatians 1:10). This worship must be according to God-given instructions and guidelines, not according to man's design. It makes sense. If we are here to worship God, we must offer the things for which He has asked and which will please Him. To do less, or more, is a waste of time.

"Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen." (Romans 1:25) In order to keep correctly focused, we must remember our place. God is the Creator, and we are His creation. God is the one who is great, and we are His subjects. Too many today believe that worship service must be according to the worshipper's demands. Wrong! Worship is for God; and our attitudes, actions, and purposes should reflect this truth. Why do you come to worship service?

"For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes." (1 Corinthians 11:26) When we gather on the Lord's day, we gather to keep the only memorial He left us to keep. Our worship centers around the Lord's Supper. If Christ had not died for our sins, what purpose would we have for worshipping? He knew and understood the forgetful nature of His children. He left the Supper as a way for us to remember the great price He paid to make possible our hope for eternal life. Why would anyone desire to reduce the number of opportunities to partake, or willfully miss partaking, on the first day of each week?

If you desire to worship God acceptably, never forget that He is the object of our worship. If not, that worship is vain and unacceptable. Why not do it the right way?
