"If You're going to Talk the Talk,
You Are Going to Have To Walk the Walk."
By Bill Brown

Many members of in our society make this statement and use it in a context where if one talks of what he is going to do, the talk must be backed up by deeds and actions, or appear vain or foolish.

While campaigning for office, politicians promise to do all kinds of things if they are elected, and after winning, they often forget or ignore what they promised.

The Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1995. After their win, Jimmy Johnson related how his players were confident of victory before the game and stated so. However, talking is one thing, and following through and performing what you have verbally committed to do is quite another. So I know what the Dallas coach meant when he said, "If you are going to talk the talk, you are going to have to walk the walk."

The spiritual application of this statement is easy to see. Jesus said of the Pharisees and scribes, "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me." {Matt.15:8} Talk Talk. And remember the son who said he would go in his father's vineyard to work, and went not? (Matt.21:30) The apostle Peter said he would never be offended because of Jesus and that he would never deny Him (Matt.26:30-35). Talk Talk.

Today, you sometimes hear brethren SAY: *(Repeat our topic)
-"I'm going to pray more" *
-"I'm going to be more involved in personal work" *
-"I'm going to study my Bible more" *
-"I'm going to be more hospitable" *
-"I'm going to be more cooperative with the elders, deacons, and the teachers." *
-"I'm going to attend all of the church services this year" *
-"I'm going to go to heaven" *

We have many wonderful examples of those who adopted the principles of our topic in their lives. For example, the Old Testament notables in Hebrews 11. After Jesus resurrection, and Pentecost, the first century Christians, though persecuted, "talked the talk and walked the walk." Paul best illustrated the example of backing up one's words when he said "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." {2 Timothy 4:7} Paul not only talked of what he was going to do, but in his life followed through with the deeds. What about you dear reader? Are you busy living the life of the one whose name you wear? Do you boast of what you're going to do for the Lord in the future? If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? God doesn't just want to hear about your plans, but see you put them into action! Good intentions, which are never realized, give no benefit to God or us. If we promise to do it, let's do it! Time is a temporal thing. Remember, God is watching!
